Privacy on Facebook – An Intervention
Everyone knows the severe privacy issues that arise throughout social media agreements, lack of knowledge, or lack of care. Now, is it truly the platform’s fault if we are the ones who don’t educate ourselves? We sign up- knowing the fact that we will not read the Terms & Conditions, or Terms of Service, of even the data policy. Personally, I never thought to read them until recently when serious questions started being raised about data breaches and personal information leaks. Have YOU even read them? Do YOU know the privacy issues that occur with Facebook?
I decided to interview 3 individuals who are Facebook users, but that seemed to be the only thing they had in common. This isn’t a bad thing, it actually made it much more interesting. I first started off by introducing myself and getting to know their opinions and how much they knew about the privacy settings and issues of Facebook. This was a little difficult… I had to be able to improvise the direction of the conversation depending on their answers to me. Honestly, I was surprised by how much my interviewees knew, because personally, I’m not sure if I would have known as much as I do now besides general private information if I hadn’t taken this class. At all…. probably ever.
All individuals that I interviewed were knowledgable with the settings, and they did not hesitate to ask questions! This honestly made me happy and feel useful because I was very excited to share my knowledge and what I learned during training through Michael Zimmer. I was able to help them in reaching the desired privacy on their accounts and I even heard comments like ‘I’m definitely going to let my parents/husband/friends know of this”. Unfortunately, this puts an end to my series of Facebook investigations, but if you have any questions about the Terms of service & conditions, or the data and privacy policies, leave them in the comments below! I would love to discuss them further…
Hi Ayris!! I love the layout of your blog and how different it is from the rest of the class’. This post was so interesting and great that each of your people told you that they were going to let others know about this! My mom always tells me to check on my privacy settings and to make sure that all of my information is private. I wonder how much of what you discussed she knows.
